Frequently Asked Questions

Submissions, Publishing & Getting Involved

1. Can I submit to HHR and the Hart House contests at the same time?

Yes. Contributors can submit to both the contests and the Review. However, the contest submissions are assessed by an independent judging panel appointed by the Literary & Library Committee, Camera Club, and Drama Society. The contest winners are published in HHR.

2. If I submit to HHR will my submission be considered for the contests and vice versa?

A submission directly to HHR will not be considered for the contests unless it is also directly submitted to the contests and vice versa. However, all winning entries to the contests are generally published or excerpted in HHR. Hence, we encourage people to submit to both.

3. What are the submission deadlines for the contests and HHR?

For up to date deadlines please consult the news or submissions sections of the website. (Kindly also refer to Question 10)

4. I am an alumnus of Hart House/University of Toronto. Can I submit my work or contribute through other means to HHR?

Although we generally publish members from the present University of Toronto/Hart House community, we do make provisions for select contributors in this category to have their works published in HHR. We highly encourage those keen on contributing to HHR to get in touch with us.

5. I am not affiliated with the University of Toronto or Hart House can I submit or contribute through other means to HHR?

Although we generally publish members from the present University of Toronto/Hart House community, we do make provisions for select contributors in this category to have their works published in HHR. We highly encourage those keen contributing to HHR to get in touch with us.

6. Are simultaneous submissions allowed?

Submitting an identical work to more than one publication at the same time is not permitted.

7. Do you publish previously published works?

No, the Review only considers original submissions; however, exceptions may be made in select cases. For example, if a photograph was published by a daily or an online news service we might be willing to consider publishing it in HHR. If your work has been previously published please visibly state this in writing during the submission process and do provide us with the relevant details.

8. I am interested in submitting more than the stated number of submissions/pieces which exceed the word limit.

The HHR team is dedicated to publishing high quality submissions; as such, we would be happy to work with you on finding a solution to this (i.e. excerpting, if we are unable to print the complete work and possibly feature the entire work online), but please get in touch with us before you send any such pieces. If you also have your repertoire online (for example Flickr, blogs etc ) we strongly recommend that you include that information in your submission. PLEASE DO NOT OTHERWISE SEND US MORE THAN THE STATED NUMBER OF SUBMISSIONS PERMITTED PER CONTRIBUTOR.

9. Can non-staff members contribute to cover art, layout design/art?

While the HHR staff is responsible for the cover art & layout, we are always open to hearing new ideas. Please note, you are likely to be recognized, depending on the nature of the contribution, in the Masthead and or Table of Contents.

10. Is the Submissions deadline applicable to those submitting cover art/layout design & art?

Although it generally is, depending on the nature of the art & literary submissions that year we are willing to work with select artists who have expressed a desire and demonstrated their capability to design cover art/layout etc.

11. Does HHR possess the copyright over my art or literary submission?

No, we do not. The copyright remains with the contributors.

12. How do I get permission to reprint art or literary work published in HHR?

Because the copyright remains with the contributors we would be happy to facilitate any such interest. Kindly get in touch with us for further information.

13. Why can I not find a visual copy of my art/photography submission online?

It is likely that your contribution was published in a much earlier edition of HHR; hence, due to technological constraints we were unable to do justice to the work in an online form. Consequently, even though the HHR team has cited the work in the issue it was published in we have not uploaded the image online. Kindly, refer to the question below.

14. Could I provide HHR with a digital/color copy of my art/photography submission that was published in an earlier edition of HHR?

We would be happy to discuss this with you. Please do drop us a line.

15. Could previously published contributors submit to the HHR again?

We are open to submissions by former contributors.

16. I wish to be part of the HHR team. How do I go about doing so?

We are always looking for fresh talent. Our team does not hesitate to include those who are willing to commit themselves to the publication. If you're interested please drop us a line and we would be happy to give you more information on the application process. (Please refer to Questions 4 & 5 as well).

17. I have missed the application deadline to join the HHR team/ have not been selected for this year's team. Can I still actively contribute?

HHR is keen on encouraging applicants who have resolved to support the publication's mission. As such, we are always willing to hear your thoughts on how you can make a tangible and lasting contribution towards HHR.

18. Do I need to have a background in Fine Arts, English or Creative Writing to contribute to the Review as a writer/artist or as a member of its staff?

Most definitely not! We have had everyone from Quants to Neurobiologists collaborate/contribute to HHR over the years.

19. Does HHR offer a stipend to its contributors or staff?

HHR is not in a capacity to offer any remuneration other than perhaps reimbursing administrative costs incurred by its staff. However, the winners of the various contests organized by the independent committees at Hart House offer a nominal reward.
