À Marie Antoinette

Talia Zajac

Really, Marie, I sympathize–
not just about your head being struck off
(nasty business, revolutions),
but about how hard it was to please your man,
since you didn’t want to be a wallflower of a wife,
then got the blame for dressing like a mistress:
costumes and parties, silks, lace, poufs, brioches,
(mais oh! Comme c’est bon, ma puce!)
loneliness misplaced among fine hosiery.
